Harmful Beliefs Poison Your Body – a fantastic article about the power of positive thinking and negative thinking from www.mindbodygreen.com

As reported in an article in The Lancet, researchers in San Diego examined the death records of almost 30,000 Chinese-Americans and compared them to over 400,000 randomly selected white people.

What they found was that Chinese-Americans, but not whites, die significantly earlier than normal (by as much as five years) if they have a combination of disease and birth year which Chinese astrology and Chinese medicine consider ill-fated.

The researchers found that the more strongly the Chinese-Americans attached to traditional Chinese superstitions, the earlier they died. When they examined the data, they concluded that the reduction in life expectancy could not be explained by genetic factors, the lifestyle choices or behavior of the patients, the skill of the doctors, or any other variable.

Why Did The Chinese-Americans Die Younger?

The researchers concluded that they died younger not because they have Chinese genes, but because they have Chinese beliefs. They believe they will die younger because the stars have hexed them. And their negative beliefs manifested as a shorter life span.

It’s not just Chinese Americans whose fears about their health can result in negative health outcomes. One study showed that 79% of medical students report developing symptoms suggestive of the illnesses they are studying. From the Sydney Morning Herald: Writing off stress – a lesson in gratitude

“If overworked, out-of-sorts employees were to write a brief essay each morning about something important to them – such as family or friends or money – they could reduce their stress levels and improve their problem-solving capabilities, says a small US study published in PLOS ONE.

The researchers found the most stressed individuals among a group of 73 students scored 50 per cent lower on a problem-solving test than the least stressed.

After writing a happy essay, however, the scores of the stressed students rose to match the scores of their more Zen-like peers.”

This is just another version of what New Agers say which is “gratitiude works”. It relieves stress and makes life better. Writing about someone you love is a way of being grateful. You’re focusing on the good things in your life.

Writing down how happy you are about something is SO much better than writing down your complaints. I must admit that in ye olde days, I used to keep a journal about the highs and lows of life, most specifically about my love life.

I collected years and years of diaries which I very unceremoniously threw out one happy day when I realised they were just diatribes of negativity and nonsense! These days, I ensure my “life notes” are replete with gratitude!

I just discovered the work of Michael Erlewine. If you haven’t heard of him and you’re a true astrology aficionado, look him up! This is one of his sites http://spiritgrooves.net He has some amazing things to say about the infamous Saturn Return.

He writes “After 30 years of age, we grow young again or, rather, remain the same age. We are regenerated, reborn – rebirth. A new generation. We stop growing old and we grow or stay young, because we grow beyond Saturn”.

I found this rather fascinating. At 30, I was still working as a fulltime journalist and media type. At that particular point, I had just worked for 12 months on a UK TV show. I was an assistant producer and I can tell you, that job put the ass into assistant!

It all took place at the time of my Saturn Return and suffice to say, it was the most toxic air I have ever had the misfortune to breathe.

Of course, everything happens for a reason. Had that Saturn Return experience been a little less vile, I might well have stayed in TV. However I decided that I would return to the world of print and writing. Which is how I ended up writing for this site, which, may I point out, is currently one of the most-visited astro blogs in the world!

After the show was over, I went to Thailand to recover. My theme song was Sweet Thing by Van Morrison. The lyrics “I shall never grow so old again” held special meaning for me. I spent hours at sunrise and sunset and in between, sitting on the beach, listening to this through my headphones, gazing over the Andaman sea, processing!
