Spiritual Books

Why Reading Spiritual Books Is So Important To Me (and Everyone Else IMHO)…

I love me a good spiritual book. Or twenty.

Spiritual books – books written about spiritual matters from chakras to Ascended Masters to astrology to ascension – are AWESOME! Reading a book about a spiritual matter which lifts you up is almost as powerful as going to an amazing retreat where you can immerse yourself in your spiritual life totally. Except in this case, you don’t even have to leave home (said the home-lover!) and you can dip in and dip out of the book throughout your day here in 3D.

In other words, you could be in one of the great cities of the world on crowded, heaving, maybe even slightly smelly public transport on your way to work, with your nose in a great spiritual book and it lifts you up and takes you to another place which you already know in your heart exists but which is not always that easy to get to from here… unless you make the effort.

For me, spending time with a spiritual book is like spending time with a like-minded friend. The fact that the book’s contents top and tail my day here in 3D where I have the same run of the mill concerns as everyone else (have the groceries been ordered? etc) really helps me to stay in touch with my walk along the spiritual path.

With this in mind, I have decided to make a list of my Top 20 Spiritual Books for you. I hope you find them as inspiring as I have.

1. Unconditional Life by Deepak Chopra. One of the books which started me on my path.

2. Spiritual Growth by Sanaya Roman. I remember reading this with awe and wonder at the start of my journey and mean to revisit it soon. Sanaya Roman has since written/channelled a host of similar books which are on my reading list.

3. The Game of Life and How to Play It by Florence Scovel Shinn. Pretty sure this was given to me by a friend and I have since bought and given away countless copies. The tone is very Christian but don’t let that put you off. Amazing and life-changing book.

4. Planets in Transit by Robert Hand. An absolute must for any student astrologer.

5. Aspects In Astrology by Sue Tompkins. Another astro-classic that no astrologer should be without.

6. Astrology for the Light Side of the Brain by Kim Rogers-Gallagher. This book makes learning astrology fun. And her wonderful book Astrology for the Light Side of the Future. Great for when you want to learn more about predictions.

7. Only Love is Real: A Story of Soulmates Reunited by Dr Brian Weiss. When I read this book and believed every word, I knew I had officially come a New Ager. Brilliant true story about two soulmates reunited across time by their medical doctor.

8. Predictive Astrology: The Eagle and the Lark by Bernadette Brady. Great book for predictive astrologers with a wonderful eclipse catalogue.

9. Seth Speaks by Jane Roberts. Seth is a disembodied entity who tells humans about life beyond 3D including amazing information about manifesting.

10. The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield. Not sure if this book’s time has been and gone but it was definitely pivotal for me at the start of my spiritual journey.

11. Ascending into Miracles: The Path of Spiritual Mastery by Jennifer Hoffman. Just read it. The kind of book with such awesome info you have to have a lie-down between chapters to integrate the information.

12. Moon Signs: The Key to Your Inner Life by Donna Cunnigham. Another one of those books that was there for me at the start of my journey. Beautiful. Also her amazing book Healing Pluto Problems

13. The Truth Will Set You Free by Svami Purna. This book was sent to me by a moonology reader and rocked my world. Very good for anyone with an interest in the Hindu way of walking the spiritual path.

14. Goddesses & Angels probably my favourite Doreen Virtue book, with the exception of Angel Astrology 101: Discover the Angels Connected with Your Birth Chart of course!

15. The Lightworkers Way: Awakening Your Spiritual Power to Know and Heal by Doreen Virtue. Another wonderful book from Doreen, this time a lot about her own spiritual journey. Really worth reading, if you’re a fan.

16. Key Words for Astrology by Hajo Banzhaf and Anna Haebler. Love this book and never travel without it. It is great for astrology writers and students alike. The title says it all.

17. A Little Light on the Spiritual Laws by Diana Cooper. Great book. Well worth reading. Really lifts your vibration as you do so.

18. The Law of Attraction CD Collection by Abraham-Hicks. Of all the books I am recommending, ironically I believe that this CD collection from the book changed my life more than any other. Listen to it repeatedly. Full stop!

19. Dying To Be Me: My Journey from Cancer, to Near Death, to True Healing by Anita Moorjani and The Law of Attraction CD Collection by Eben Alexander are the two best books I have read about the afterlife.

20. I have to recommend my books while I am here! Angel Astrology 101: Discover the Angels Connected with Your Birth Chart and Angel Astrology 101: Discover the Angels Connected with Your Birth Chart – about how to attract love into your life. And my more spiritual novel, if you’re into fiction: Angel Astrology 101: Discover the Angels Connected with Your Birth Chart

Guru? What guru?

When I was writing my book Cosmic Love, I wanted to use a quote from Deepak Chopra regarding meditation, detachment and manifestation.

It was words he’d used in an interview I had had with him for something else I had written, so I thought I had better write to him to ask permission to use it again in the context of the book. I copied and pasted the manuscript text into an email and sent it off to him, for his permission.

The text started off something like “New Age guru Deepak Chopra says that…”

The reply came back overnight from his secretary. “Deepak says that’s fine, thank you. Please take out the word guru.”

I understand this to an extent. For one thing, Deepak was once the centre of a lot of cynical criticism (people seem to have tired of having him at their target and have now moved on to the next thing.) He didn’t want to be set up again. (Of course I removed the word, just grateful to him for his speedy response and persmission.)

The irony, though, is that being of Indian heritage, Deepak probably understands the word better than most people in the West. And whether he likes to be called it or not, he really is a guru.

Although a guru sounds almost funny to our ears, literally, a guru is “a dispeller of darkness”. The syllable “gu” means shadows, the syllable “ru”, he who disperses them; because of the power to disperse darkness the guru is thus named.

A guru is someone who guides the way for you. Someone who dispels the darkness. The word is still very laden with negative connotations. You could just as easily say “spiritual teacher”.

For many thousands of people around the world, including me, Deepak has indeed dispelled darkness!

In his book Wishes Fulfilled, Wayne Dyer repeatedly refers to various authors, living and dead, as his spiritual teachers, and I really like that.

I also consider Doreen Virtue one of my main spiritual teachers, I have gained so much knowledge through her courses, for example. I also do have a spiritual teacher in India, but that’s a story for another time!

Is there someone who has taught you? A book which changed your life, spiritually?
